Hi Emily,
There are quite a few private schools in the city but what you're dong is much more important than helping another kid get into an Ivy. Keep it up.
What part of NYC do you hail from?
Jo
Hi Jo,
I went to NYU, so I used to live all over downtown. I miss it TERRIBLY. Like, I will read the website overheardinnewyork.com and laugh at it (because it is A GREAT website that you should read if you currently don't), and the overhearer often writes where they were when they heard the quote, and I always try to imagine myself on that corner.
I would move back in a HEARTBEAT if I had a job...

Hi Emily,
I love that website. Many times I laugh 'til I cry reading some of the entries. Are those people for real? But you know, they are; we just don't hear them all the time. I live in the Upper West Side, just off CPW, in a cute flat in an old brownstone. I work on the Upper East Side, just across the park. Tough commute, huh?
Jo...
Yep, this is me pitying you and your commute...
I too, have cried laughing at overheard. I WISH you could log-in to it and then favorite/save your...favorites. So you could keep all the truly good ones in a nice neat place for quick access. I think if I was having a really bad day, re-reading my favorites would help me a lot.

A great bio of DiMaggio exists...by Richard Ben Cramer. I read it last year. It's quite a good portrait, honest and not fawning or shallow. It's a bio of the man, not the persona, like many are. I'd bet the library has it. I also recommend Jane Leavy's bio of Sandy Koufax, "A Lefty's Legacy". She takes an unusual approach and it reveals the subject in a less chronological fashion. It's a much a portrait as a bio.
I will look into both of those. I just bought a few baseball books I thought I'd enjoy, but they're not what I wanted, so I think they're going back. Does Amazon even TAKE things back??
Oh oops; I actually just mailed them back (they DO take returns, you just have to print out some labels for the boxes). They WERE:
The Greatest Baseball Stories Ever Told: Thirty Unforgettable Tales from the Diamond
Baseball's Best Short Stories (Sporting's Best Short Stories series)
Still seemed interesting, but one was kinda old and NONE of the stories seemed to be by anyone I heard of (the first one) and the second I didn't read, but it seemed like fiction stories about baseball, which wasn't what I wanted.
There will be copies of each of those at amazon soon if you're interested

I don't fully get it, but I will accept it.
What's up Yankees in first place!
(honestly, as long as it isn't the Sox there, I'm fine).
Hope the Orioles start to turn it around, soon!

Hi Emily, I just read your profile and I see that you are a baseball gal! Nice! Anytime you want to talk baseball just throw something out there and I'll bite....baseball, baseball history....stats...memories...nostalgia....seriously, anytime. You seem nice. I'm pro grad-student and Master's candidates. :-)
I already have a Master's; and depending on whether or not I have a job in a few weeks, I may be getting another (or just some courses).
I looooooooooooove baseball. I'm actually anxiously awaiting a biography of Dimaggio and another of Lou Gehrig I couldn't help myself from buying despite being poor. Somewhere around my house is a big book of Yogi quotes that I gave my dad last year, and I am looking for it because I know there are some gems I should be using more frequently.

Im doing great ! So did you have fun last week end? I didn't do much. A lot of yard work and went fishing for a couple of hours.
Last weekend? Hmm; this past weekend was boring, as this weekend will prove to be, but the weekend BEFORE that, I was in New York, visiting friends and going to a concert and having an amazing time.
For what were you fishing?

It's nice to be with friends and do things. I have a great time with mine. I fish for large mouth bass.
We used to go fishing with my camp when I was younger. Flounder and Fluke and Sea Robbins and maybe something else. I only ever caught seaweed. I was always secretly glad about that, because I felt bad being the one who killed something. I just had fun being on the boat and smelling the air and feeding the gulls.
Pretty much the same here; Unfortunately, I don't know many people around where I live now, so my weekends are pretty quiet.
You know what? I AM a nice person to be around! Haha
I miss my old life with my old friends an unfair amount.
What about you? Are you lucky enough to live where you grew up/know people?

I have never been there. I have only ever really been along the coasts, and as of a year ago yesterday, Chicago.
Oh, no, I meant for a visit.
I'm in Massachusetts right now.
If I COULD live in Chi-town, I would. And I would reside in whichever quadrant is located near Wrigley so I could see a million zillion Cubs games (I LOVE THEM).

I have been a CUBS fan since 1968.. I love the Cubbies. I remember when Joe Girardi was playing for the Cubs. I was hoping he would be the Cubs manager before ole Lou pinnella came in. I don't like Lou to much. It seems he finds ways to lose..
Joe Girardi is the reason I love the Cubs, actually. When he left the Yanks and went back to the Cubs, I started watching Cubs games too. And though he's back with us, I still care about them greatly and watch them from time to time. I am still hoping to see them stay good enough for a playoff and win the World Series.
I dunno; I find Pinella kinda entertaining. He and Zambrano have some sweet tempers ...

Why thank you. Never really blogged b4. Thought I should start with just a random boring comment before I start to put the world to rights.
